The laser printer will be connected directly to zippy, the CS Department UNIX host. The printer will physically reside in Darwin 18 where students can get to it to retrieve their printed documents. Documents will have a cover page indicating the person who printed it.
In order to print from a Macintosh you will have to have an account on zippy. You will find the laser printer in the Chooser, but you will be unable to print a document unless you have an AUFS virtual file server volume mounted on the desktop.
Documents are printed by zippy as if they came from the account which is specified when the AUFS volume is mounted. When we install printing accounting we will charge a nominal amount per page printed. The cover page is not charged as part of the document. If there are documents spooled to the laser printer when you mount your AUFS volume, they will be printed and charged to your account. You should remove from the print queue any documents that are spooled to the CS laser printer. You can tell that there are documents spooled by looking at the icon for the printer. If the icon has the image of a page of a document superimposed over it then there are documents spooled to that printer. You can remove them from the print queue by double clicking the printer icon, selecting the print jobs, and deleting them.
